Recently I showed a collection of my work at Bus Project Space, a gallery run and funded by visual artists. This project included my current investigations into costume design and installation. The project revolved around the recycling of worn and sentimental fabrics. I would like to thank artist Kay Abude for photographing the exhibition for this blog.
This installation was a development of my graduate work for the Victorian College of the Arts shown in December 2009. Here the costume wrapped a totem like structures, rather than the body.

Bus Projects will be showcasing some of my most recent art works. Presented in this exhibition are photographic images that evolved from an ongoing engagement with the process of collage. Here the paraphernalia of adolescence; old band t-shirts, sweaters, shorts and jeans undergo their own kind of puberty, transforming and developing into elaborated costumes and coverings.
In the studio environment, everyday objects were deconstructed and rebuilt into new structures. These new structures were photographed and subjected to the same process of collage and deconstruction. At the penultimate stage of this cycle, the coverings were again photographed, this time for an imagined fashion editorial. These images were then again collaged and deconstructed to complete the metamorphosis.
Like a snake shedding its skin, we are always casting off our coverings, in a constant state of flux. This project exposes the material potential of the old and worn, with each level of deconstruction creating new options and new propositions.

This behind the scenes shot shows new Aussie Band, Miami Horror wearing a piece from my graduating collection. The dude second from the left is draped with two of my neck pieces made from recycled T-shirts. They were tops I sported when I was a teen. In fact, one was an old band t-shirt from a concert some time past. Its funny to see art works inspired by rock, re-entering that cultural realm. Other local designers in the mix include; Trimapee and Kirrily Johnston. (Image thanks to Fashion Hayley).

Back in October Fashion Hayley visited my studio at the Victorian College of the Arts to have a sneak peek at my designs, most of which are made from recycled materials. Here are some snapshots from the collection. Originally designed while dreaming of rock stars, its nice to know that Hayley used a few of my pieces for the Miami Horror Shoot.
